A 3.5-hour ordeal due to poor preparation
***Update*** I received a call from the owner, Josh, which I really appreciated. We had a thoughtful conversation about the breakdown in communication during my recent experience. Josh assured me that this is not reflective of the standard practices at Village Home Services. Given my positive past experiences with the company and this sincere follow-up, I feel confident that this situation was an exception. I would absolutely work with Village Home Services again and understand that this experience was not typical of how they operate.
I have owned my house in Chelmsford since 2015 and have used Village Electric (now Village Home Services) multiple times over the years, always receiving excellent service and professionalism. Naturally, when my main 100 AMP breaker tripped over the weekend and wouldn’t stay in reset mode, I contacted them again.
I called on Monday and explained in detail that the main 100 AMP breaker would not stay reset unless held manually, and I scheduled an appointment for Thursday between 8–11 AM. I emphasized that I do not live in the area and was concerned about the wide window. The representative assured me it was the first appointment of the day and would begin at 8 AM.
Anthony, the technician, did arrive on time, which was great. I brought him to the basement, described the issue again, and he acknowledged it. He asked if there were issues with any of the outlets in the house. I told him that of course any outlets connected to that breaker are not working at the moment. He mentioned doing a full safety check, which I was fine with, especially if additional issues were found. He said he’d let me know once done.
An hour passed, and I noticed him sitting in his van. When I approached him, he asked to review findings at a table, which I declined (he could see that the house was empty). He then went through a checklist—none of which involved using tools or actually testing the breaker. He just checked boxes from a visual assessment.
The issue I called about had not been assessed. Instead, he presented a list of recommendations, clearly upselling services, without addressing the core problem.
He informed me that just testing the breaker would cost $466 that I would need to pay upfront. I found that unacceptable and told him I was disappointed in how far the company’s standards had fallen. He then said he’d call his boss for permission to test the breaker without the upfront payment, which left me wondering why an electrician would need authorization to diagnose the most basic issue and what the $75 service fee involves if it isn't to test the issue that customers call about.
I had clearly stated when I called that the breaker needed to be replaced, so if Village Home Services wanted to include the $466 as part of the total labor cost, I would have had no issue paying a fair, all-inclusive price at the time the work was completed. However, having someone sit at my house for an hour without even testing the breaker felt like a waste of time and a lack of respect for the customer.
Eventually, with permission granted, he tested the breaker, only to confirm, unsurprisingly, that it needed replacement. Even more frustrating, he didn’t have the necessary breaker in his vehicle, despite my clear explanation of the issue days earlier (Monday).
He had to drive to Methuen to pick one up.
After another hour, Anthony returned and replaced the breaker. Shockingly, he made no effort to test the outlets afterward, despite having asked about them earlier. I had to request he walk through the house with me to confirm everything was working.
He completed the job by 11:30 AM. This repair turned into a 3.5-hour ordeal due to poor preparation, lack of initiative, and disregard for my time.

Village Home Service was amazing. On a Friday at 1:00 pm, a truck ripped the power line, conduit, and meter from my house. Within 2 hours, Kevin showed up and worked into the evening replacing everything, including arranging for the town inspector to sign off and place the order for the utility to run new power to the house. Craig figured out the issue fast
I smelled a little gas from time to time over a couple weeks from my gas fireplace. I called today at lunchtime and by 3 p.m., Craig had the issue figured out, showed me what the problem was, and laid out the options. A crack in the original pilot pipe was causing the smell. Turns out I needed a new part so they tracked one down to order and will be back when it comes in.
